WINCHESTER — It's "out with the old, in with the new" for a Winchester restaurant.
Papa Subs has been open since Nov. 8 at 772 Old U.S. 36. The restaurant serves submarine sandwiches, soup, salads and all-day breakfast. The space used to be a Dollar General. The building was purchased last year by Mark Tipsord, owner of Tipsord's Turf & Landscape — Florist and Gifts next door.
Jerri Hurrellbrink, one of six owners of the sandwich shop, said the idea for Papa Subs came about from a desire to rent out the space to a franchise. She said it originally was planned to become a Subway restaurant, but talks with that company fizzled out. Tipsord also concluded that being a franchisee was the wrong fit for the group, she said, which is why they decided to become an independent company.
